Dan Baum presented at the Mendocino Coast Writers conference a few years ago. He was enthusiastically received and I have been following his pieces in the New Yorker and other publications ever since. He has just published a new book about New Orleans which is getting good press. Nine Lives: Death and Life in New Orleans.
